Arvada Center - New Management

The Arvada Center loses approximately $4 million a year in tax dollars. The majority of their production contracts are "unionized" which explains the exorbitant ticket prices. Perhaps Mr. Johnson can fix this bleeding animal.
Clark Johnson will take over temporarily as interim executive director of the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities , City Manager Mark Deven announced Thursday.
Johnson fills the role being vacated by the resignation last week of Gene Sobczak, who leaves Jan. 6 to become president and CEO of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra.
Johnson joined the Arvada Center in August 2010 as chief operating officer. He’ll retain those duties while filling the larger interim role. Before joining the Arvada Center, Johnson was the city’s assistant manager.
The Arvada Center will conduct a national search for Sobczak’s replacement.

Boob Fifer Angry?

Recent reports suggest that Boob Fifer has a pretty severe anger issue. This report comes from some anonymous sources on the AEDA board which Mr. Fifer previously served on as President. We also spoke with some of Mr. Fifer's neighbors who alleged that he does in fact have some issues with anger.

In addition to this we recently discovered through some police reports that Mr. Fifer is actually going forward with charges against his previous opponent Ed Tomlinson in relation to campaign finances. Guess what Boob, you won, time to let go of the anger and move on.

2011 Election Results

Election Results 2011

After carefully researching each candidate and where they stand on the issues relevant to their race such as:
The size and scope of city government
The budget surplus
The second amendment
Fiscal responsibility and balanced budgets
Sustainability
Public transportation
The accountability of elected and paid officials
Transparency

we’ve decided to release the following endorsements.
Mayor: Either Dan Bidstrup or Dave Chandler. Anybody is better than Marc Williams. I see his signs in my sleep.
City Council:
                At Large: Ed Tomlinson
                Ward 2: Cody McNutt
Ward 4: Humpty Dumpty (you’ll have to write this one in…)
School Board:
                District 3: Preston Branaugh
                District 4: Jim Powers

Proposition 103: Not just no. Hell no.
Charter Amendments:
2A: Yes. For heaven’s sake clean up that charter text.
2B: No. Do we really want pipelines of information running between us and other cities in Jefferson county?
2C: No. Just the words “Emergency Ordinance” throw me into a tailspin. I want as many people as possible to agree that there is a need for an “Emergency Ordinance” before it is adopted.
2D: No. To manage the city you should actually live in the city and that’s potentially a year’s worth of travel expenses paid for by the Arvada taxpayer while the new city manager travels between Arvada and his home town of Sidney, Australia. Exaggeration, but still.
2E: Yes. It took a team of lawyers to understand exactly the purpose of this one, but we’ve all concluded that there must be some city employee who’s driven the council crazy and they want the ability to tell the city manager so. Maybe it’s sustainability coordinator. Yeah, that’s it.

School Resurces Used to Promote Political Agenda

ANOTHER JEFFCO SCHOOL PRINCIPAL USES SCHOOL RESOURCES TO PROMOTE POLITICAL PROPOGANDA AS BALLOTS ARE BEING RECEIVED
ARVADA, CO:  Another email has surfaced; this time from the principal of Arvada High School sent to parents promoting political propaganda and lies in an effort to influence the school board election.

In the email, Arvada West High School principal Rob Bishop promotes two documents that provide "very accurate and truthful information." The email indicates there is some "inaccurate and gloomy information being circulated."  Parents receiving this information should know that the data provided to them contradicts the data within JeffCo’s own legal report known as the CAFR - Consolidated Annual Financial Report.

Specifically, the email indicates the annual cost per pupil is $7,900 which just includes spending from the general fund.  What the principal and the district fail to point out is that the annual district spending is just under one billion dollars and when divided by the student enrollment of 85,971, you get over $11,500.00.  Their game of funny numbers and spun data should be an insult to the parents and community members they are trying to fool. If their number is accurate, where did the gap get spent?
Both documents refer to the district's Return on Investment – ROI, a “green” rating of which JeffCo Superintendent Dr. Cindy Stevenson is so proud.  What they fail to highlight is their "green" rating comes from a study performed by The Center for American Progress and so far, I have yet to validate that JeffCo was even part of the data pool for that study.  Regardless, since when did a known left extremist Socialist group become the standard of measure for public education?

The letter does not specifically refer to any of the candidates for school board, but the information directly contradicts the campaign messages of the conservative candidates Jim Powers and Preston Branaugh, known as "The Dads."  The attachments in the email (just the facts and Q&A) had been posted on the school districts website since just prior to the ballots being mailed, but were removed from the site Friday without explanation.  This is clearly the desperate attempt of the union-controlled board and administration to use their school resources to influence voters in order to maintain control of their billion-dollar budget.  JeffCo does have some things to be proud of but, they must not continue to ignore the crisis situation affecting the students.

In addition to the email sent from Arvada High school, a similar one was sent last week from the principal of Lakewood High School.  The JCEA teacher's union also sent a third email on the school's network initiating coordination of their GOTV effort and included a message to its membership to "remember, this election is about protecting your contract and owning your profession."  So much for putting the needs of the students first.

Should using school resources to influence the school board race be considered interfering with the fair election process?  Is this moral?  Is this legal?  Parents should be outraged at the blatant deceit against them.  Will they vote for the union backed status quo candidates or vote for the fresh outsiders deemed, "the dads?"  Remember, the definition of insanity is doing things over again and expecting different outcomes.  If parents want more for their kids, they must elect leaders who will first admit there are problems, else nothing will ever change and our kids will continue a negative trend in public education.

Proposition 103

Proposition 103, in case you hadn’t heard, is a ballot measure that will go to vote in November this year for consideration by the Colorado taxpayers. Democratic state Senator Rollie Heath, unsurprisingly, was the sponsor of the initiative due to the $500 million cut over the last three years. The bill is, in the simplest terms possible, an increase in income tax across the board with “5 percent from 4.63 percent and the sales and use levy to 3 percent from 2.9 percent for five years.” This is apparently all due to the fact that Colorado is in the bottom twenty states in terms of how much money is actually spent on education.

Note, I said spent, not education results.

In terms of education results, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, Colorado placed above the national average in every subject from 4-8 grades from 2009, including math. In fact, Colorado is better than or equal to all but five states in the US in fourth grade math, and better than or equal to all but eight by the eighth grade.

In reading, Colorado does even better-Only four states beat it’s scores at 4th grade, and only seventeen are it’s equals. By eighth grade, again, only seven states can claim better education rankings and only nineteen can match it.

Even in Science and Writing, Colorado finds itself in the middle to higher rankings of the country, where until 2009 it was only average at best in mathematics, and a look at those same statistics see that the scores have been rising since 2005.

The website was unable to display such rankings for Grade 12, but SAT score rankings in a chart by amount spent on pupils from K-12 can suffice for a rough estimate. According to the chart, Colorado was number 15 in the country in rankings of highest overall SAT scores, with it’s strongest showings in mathematics.

While education can always be improved, the fact these scores are so high clearly indicates that it’s not necessarily a lack of funding that determines results.

At this point, in the wake of the Wisconsin union debacle and the Atlanta school district grade fixing scandals, to think that what the current crop of educators need is more money is more than a little suspect. Being proposed by Democrats, who are heavily supported by unions and teacher’s unions in particular, makes it more suspect. And the idea that it would add an extra $3 billion dollars into the educational budget based on minor tax raises across the board in an already struggling economy is... Well... Extremely thin.

While these seem to be minor tax raises, it would in fact result in the largest tax increase in the history of the state of Colorado, going to a general fund that the politicians could spend however they like. Yes, that sounds like it would be used in an absolutely trustworthy manner doesn't it?

As the great French economist Frederic Bastriat commented: “In the department of economy, an act, a habit, an institution, a law, gives birth not only to an effect, but to a series of effects. Of these effects, the first only is immediate; it manifests itself simultaneously with its cause - it is seen. The others unfold in succession- they are not seen.” In effect, it is an political economic version of Newton’s law that every action has a reaction. As we see in the massive uncertainty generated by the actions of a blundering government in Washington, even well intended legislation can have unforeseen, even disastrous effects.

“But Thomas,” you say, “it’s just an extra .37 percent income tax.” Yes it is, but given the growing performance of students at virtually every level of education with less spending, I fail to see the necessity of increasing it when state spending in general has led to massive deficits that burden the economy from the nation to the state level. It’s addressing a non-existent problem: “We’re not spending enough on our schooling despite the fact the results are improving!”

It’s as if someone were to complain: “That Jane Austin novel was great, but do you know what it was missing? Hover boards!” Though to be fair, that may not be the best analogy. I for one would love to see Mr. Darcy fighting apes with jet packs on a hoverboard with a moon laser.

Just me? Okay...

Ideally, legislation should be drafted to deal with a real problem. In reality, it is often an act with the interests of many parties involved with the problem it is addressing to a varying degree. If it has the interest of many parties rather than a singular few, then it is more likely to be focused on the exact problem. With fewer interests involved, it is less likely to be focused on a problem.

This is clearly an amendment with the interest of Democratic politicians in mind before anything else. The $3 billion in raised tax revenues is also extremely dubious, and if there is a revenue increase it will invariably go to teacher’s unions and back into Democratic political campaigns before whatever’s left trickles down to the schools, generally for administrators rather than teachers.

It’s the same old game that’s been repeated numerous times since the 1950s, and I strongly urge you, the reader, to vote no on it. There are better ways of improving education than giving the Democrats and unions more money.

Please let me know if you need a photo of Jill.

School Board Candidate Fellman Receives Nod from Realtors

ARVADA, Colo. (Oct. 4, 2011) – Jill Fellman, candidate for Jefferson County Schools Board of Education, has received the endorsement of the Realtors group representing the 778 square-mile area in which she is campaigning.

The Jefferson County Association of Realtors recently merged with the North Metro Denver Realtors Association and the Denver Board of Realtors, and it is this group that has given Fellman its stamp of approval, along with a $500 donation to her campaign.

“The Jefferson County Public Schools have always been a magnet, drawing homebuyers to our communities,” said Justin Knoll, chairman of the board. “Our schools are facing complicated issues as they strive to maintain excellence. Jill has the knowledge and leadership skills to work with the community and the District as we grapple with these issues. Jeffco Schools will continue their tradition of excellence with Fellman’s leadership.”

Fellman lives in Arvada and would represent District 3 on the School Board, but the county-wide election is open to all registered voters in Jefferson County. Ballots will begin arriving in the mail the middle of this month, and voting ends Nov. 1.

For information about Fellman’s campaign, go to www.JillFellman.comAnyone with inquiries about ways to support Fellman in her campaign can call 303-378-2010 or send questions via email to Jill@JillFellman.com.

The following news release is available for immediate distribution…

Realtors Choose Their Man for Arvada City Council

Endorsement Goes to Bob Fifer for At-Large bid

ARVADA, Colo. (Oct. 3, 2011) – The Jefferson County Association of Realtors has chosen to endorse Bob Fifer, a network engineer for CenturyLink, in the race for Arvada City Council. The endorsement injects an additional $500 into the Fifer campaign.

“From the campaign’s beginning, I have tried to convey the message that Arvada has long been a terrific place to work and raise a family, and we just need an injection of creative ideas to keep the city pointed in the right direction,” Fifer said. “I think the endorsement from JCAR is further evidence that my message is getting through.”

Fifer has pledged to bolster Arvada’s spirit of volunteerism and make it a city where small businesses can thrive. In support of his campaign, he has received donations from 72 different individuals.

“Bob’s focus on the quality of life in our community, forming partnerships and engaging residents in their community, earned Bob our support,” said Justin Knoll, JCAR’s chairman of the board.

Many Arvada residents have already met Fifer and talked with him as he has walked to more than 1,600 homes providing campaign material. For information about the campaign, to learn how to help, or to make a donation, go to www.ElectBobFifer.com, or send email toBobFifer@q.com.

Chandler: Machine Politics in Arvada

Conflict of interest and the appearance of bias have tainted a candidate forum in Arvada says mayoral contender Dave Chandler.

"The city government's TV station has asked the Arvada Chamber of Commerce to organize a candidate forum on October 6, but this Chamber is clearly compromised and biased and should not be involved in this kind of event," Chandler said. "The movers and shakers of a powerful faction of the Arvada Chamber leadership have contributed thousands of dollars to my main opponent. There is big money involved and Chamber staff cannot be expected to act in ignorance of this reality."

Chandler said that the sponsorship by Arvada city government's KATV channel 8 is acceptable if the host for such a forum is impartial, fair, open, and unbiased. "Did the city government do any checking to find out if this private group had a bias before they invited them to organize this forum?"

"There is an odor of machine-type politics arising from this government-private organization partnership. Is this the "business as usual" kind of politics that good citizens of our community should tolerate?"

Chandler pointed out that Chamber board member Ted Terranova and family/business have contributed $1,750 to mayoral candidate Marc Williams; Chamber board member Franke Barone and relatives have contributed $2,250 to Marc Williams (Barone is also Williams's campaign manager); a member of Williams's law firm is a board member of the Chamber and that law firm has contributed the maximum $750 to Williams; and chair-elect of the Chamber board, Brett Haigler has given Williams $150.

"I am running for mayor of Arvada in large measure because I want to give voters the choice whether or not to kick out of office the special interests, big money, and insiders taking care of themselves and their cronies that we are sick and tired of in this country."

Teachers vote for reducing their union fees in times of economic hardship

Here's a quote from the JCEA May newletter:

"Delegates voted on and approved several resolutions including one that gives the CEA [Colorado Education Association] board the ability to lower dues in times of economic crisis..."

I find this so hypocritical. These are the same people who will be out in droves over the coming weeks to support a tax hike on the rest of us (Proposition 103).

Jeffco Teachers Union resorts to scare tactics to manipulate BOE race

The following is taken directly from the JCEA newsletter. The last paragraph is the threat. I am publicly requesting the JCEA to cite their sources for "indications" as I'm sure residents of Jeffco would be interested in knowing this information as well as which candidates are the "extremists".  I find it interesting that they don't mention candidate names at all, so we must assume that the entire union has already been told who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. Or are we to assume that in a non-partisan election, we actually should pay attention to party affiliation? No!

I'm going to attend the CCU debate on Sept 26 [VIEW DETAILS] and make up my own mind. Hmmm that would be so evolutionary, avant-garde and downright progressive!

September 7, 2011 – Issue #2

NEA Member Benefits: Money in your pocket, voice in your profession

At JCEA we strive to recruit, maintain, and engage membership by creating a real culture of member ownership in the Association. We believe that the true strength of our membership is not only in our numbers, but in the passion that each member brings to the teaching profession and our collective goal of getting real results for children.
We also understand that times are tough right now. Teachers are dealing with a 3% pay cut and an overall weakened economy. So, we thought it was important to remind members of the economic benefits of belonging. “I was amazed at the savings I was able to get by using my member benefits through NEA. Just by switching my car and homeowners insurance to California Casualty I saved $900 a year – much more than my annual membership dues” said Chrisette Soderberg member and teacher at Ute Meadows Elementary.
In addition to the great deals that California Casualty and Horace Mann offer to our members, NEA Member Benefits also includes travel discounts on airfare and rental cars, an auto purchase program and free life insurance. NEA’s Click-n-Save program provides discounts at retailers, local restaurants, online stores, electronics, clothing, household items, movie tickets and more. Visit NEA Member Benefits at www.neamb.com to learn about the full range of benefits and discount programs available to our members.
We know that in order to achieve real results for children we must ensure that every student is taught by a quality teacher. A 21st Century education is necessary so that students can compete in the global economy. All stakeholders including teachers, parents, administrators, students, community members and elected officials are accountable to quality public schools. Our current economic reality makes this all the more difficult—for the District, and for you as an individual educator.
However because these tough conditions exist, we need to keep together for the good of our students, our profession, and ourselves. Because we are working harder in our classrooms, we also have to work harder outside our classrooms for more resources and better school funding.
Through strong membership and collective action we can restore sanity to the Jeffco school board. If the extremists successfully take over the school board, all indications are that they intend to gut your contract, implement Douglas County style vouchers, and take away your ability to advocate for quality teaching and learning conditions. Join together with other JCEA members by volunteering at least four hours over the next few months. Send your name, phone number, building and home email address to Callie Orgeron at corgeron@coloradoea.org  to get more detailed information.

Peer Pressure and the Jeffco School Board

Peer pressure: Pressure from one's peers to behave in a manner similar or acceptable to them

We all agree that peer pressure is usually a bad thing right? I mean we teach our kids to think for themselves and not just go along with the crowd because it’s easy. We’re disappointed when they succumb, proud when they resist and stand by their principles.

So why doesn’t that apply when we become adults? Why is it that some people are so intolerant of any opinion that isn’t in lockstep with their own?1 Why is it that the school board and educational establishment in Jefferson County fall into that category?

Is there really no room for public debate? Is it reasonable to send them millions of dollars to teach our children and not ask for a say in how it’s done or accountability from our educators?2 I don’t want insanity in the process any more than they do. (Yes, I’m referring to the questionable behavior of Laura Boggs.) However, I think the insanity stems from the sheer magnitude of the task at hand: namely to slow down the entrenched bureaucracy long enough to get a handle on what’s really going on and shed some light for the rest of us to see.

The Jeffco school district is in financial straits and it’s going to take more than a team of best buddy educators who think exactly alike to fix it. Many schools’ test scores are horrible and the voters need to fire the person in charge of the math program, not give her a promotion.3 The Jeffco school board has to make some tough choices that the entrenched aren’t likely to make.4 Pay attention to your vote this October and ask yourself, “Is it maybe time for some outsiders with a fresh perspective or do I want to elect more cheerleaders to the squad who just smile and yell "Yea Team!"?”

Arvada High's Assistant Principal Charged With Sexual Assault On Child

POSTED: 9:40 am MDT August 26, 2011
UPDATED: 3:15 pm MDT August 26, 2011

An assistant principal at Arvada High School admitted to police that he was having an affair with a student after his wife found sexually explicit messages on his Facebook page and forced him to turn himself in, according to an arrest affidavit.

Anthony Alvarez, 40, was arrested Thursday night on charges of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust.According to the affidavit, Alvarez's wife caught him talking dirty on the phone to a girl on Wednesday and also found X-rated interactions between the two on his Facebook page.
Alvarez told police he met the girl when he was a teacher at Everitt Middle School in Wheat Ridge and she was in 7th grade, according to the affidavit. He told police the girl, who was now a 15-year-old student at Arvada High, would come into his office, talk to him daily, and entice him by whispering dirty words to him.He told police that the girl "was the one who came on to him," according to the affidavit."He said he was not a predator and he never before had any sexual relationship or sexual contact with anyone under the age of 18. He has had affairs before but they were over the age of 18," according to the affidavit.

Girl Says Alvarez Was 'Blackmailing Her

When police interviewed the girl, she said that she and Alvarez have had a relationship for the past 6 to 8 months. She said she felt like Alvarez was "blackmailing" her, according to the affidavit. She said he touched her chest and butt on occasion, and one time, showed her his erection while they were in his office, according to the affidavit. She said on Aug. 9, Alvarez offered her a ride home after school and she accepted because it was hot outside. She said he drove her to the Landmark movie theater and parked. In the car, he told her to rub his nipples, touch herself, rub his private area, then lick his penis, according to the affidavit. She said she was scared and the doors to the car were locked. She said he eventually opened the door and she went into the theaters to wash her mouth and call her parents. When the officer told the girl that they would like to interview her further at the Children's Advocacy Center, the girl began to cry, fearing that she would be removed from her home, the affidavit said. The officer assured her that they would not remove her from her parent's custody.

Jeffco School District Puts Alvarez On Paid Administrative Leave

Alvarez has been an assistant principal at Arvada High School since 2008.He has been with the Jeffco Public Schools District since 2000.The school district has placed him on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, police said.Investigators said they are still in the process of conducting interviews related to the case. The school district sent the following letter to parents at Arvada High School:
Dear Arvada High School Parents,A Colorado Department of Education rule requires that schools notify parents when a staff member is arrested or charged with violating certain laws. This notice is to inform you that Anthony Alvarez, an assistant principal at Arvada High School, who has worked at the school since 2008 and has been with Jeffco Public Schools since 2000, was arrested and charged with:
    • Suspicion of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust. (C.R.S. 18-3-405)
He has been placed on administrative leave. Please remember that under state and federal laws, this person is innocent until proven guilty. The Colorado Department of Education rule prohibits any description in the notice of the underlying fact of the arrest/charge.

City Manger Picked

I wanted to take a few moments to provide you with an update related to the selection process for the next City Manager of Arvada. After an extensive search of candidates from across the nation, Mark Deven (the current City manager of Woodland, California) has been decided upon as the person to succeed Craig Kocian this fall.
This decision was difficult considering the quality of all of the candidates who were considered for this critical post within the organization. It was the thoughtful and vital assistance provided by citizens, business leaders and City staff involved in the overall selection process that offered Council the essential information to make the best decision possible in moving forward in the next chapter of our history.
We have accomplished so much as a City under the outstanding leadership of Craig, and it is the expectation of the entire City Council that Mark will provide the same level of guidance, expertise and dedication that has become the standard set by Craig and the entire employee body.
Mayor Bob Frie

Zealous Zenzinger Gerrymanders

Our city council representative went to the last redistricting meeting and it wasn't to represent us. She is quoted in the transcript as saying, "With regards [to] the Adams County portion of SD 19, those residents consider themselves Arvadans".

For those of you who don't know this is the definition of gerrymandering just to be clear:

Gerrymander

1. (Government, Politics & Diplomacy) to divide the constituencies of (a voting area) so as to give one party an unfair advantage
2. to manipulate or adapt to one's advantage

This is an official transcript of the August 9th redistricting meeting where Councilor Zenzinger spoke:

August 9th 2011 9:43 PM
Rachel Palmer Zenzinger from the Arvada City Council spoke. With regards the Adams County portion of SD 19, those residents consider themselves Arvadans and it makes sense to have them in SD 19. Old Town Arvada is the heart of the community. It's been in a different senate district and is now included. The new Gold Line transit line will have a station in the Adams County portion of Arvada. East Arvada is very different from western Arvada. It's older and harder to get funding for from the city council. It makes more sense to divide on Wadsworth. All schools for closure were along Wadsworth. She explained the Wadsworth corridor would be about 88 to 52 to Tennyson.

I only wish we had been able to attend this meeting and watch this farce.

Senator Hudak believes "Most of the Latinos who live in Adams County are in Sheridan corridor."
This is what our Senator had to say:

Official transcript of the August 9th redistricting meeting where Senator Hudak spoke:
9:34 PM
Senator Evie Hudak talked about HD 25 and SD 19. She likes that Westminister is almost contiguous in SD 19. With regards the Adams County portion, it connects Westminster and Arvada. Most of the Latinos who live in Adams County are in Sheridan corridor. Old Town Arvada is very similar to communities on other side of Sheridan. It puts the new part of Arvada in with parts that are already in current SD 16 (proposed 35). She pointed out that school articulation areas are split among a lot of districts. With regards HD 29, it would make sense to wholly inclose it within SD 19.

By The Denver Post
Arvada police are investigating whether a possible stray dog or a coyote bit a 16-year-old girl during the weekend.
The teenager was walking her heeler mix in the area of 86th Parkway and Simms Street, when either a "mangy-looking dog" or a coyote approached her and bit her on the forearm, according to a news release form the Arvada Police Department.
The girl's dog attacked the animal that bit her, causing it to release her arm and run away.
She described the animal as medium sized, light brown and grayish in color, and very thin with a bushy tail.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife and Arvada's Animal Management Office are also investigating the incident.
While officials have not confirmed it was a coyote that bit the teenager, coyote awareness signs are being posted in the area.

McNutt Arvada City Council Candidate

ARVADA REPORT ENDORSES CODY MCNUTT

CODY MCNUTT ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR ARVADA CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT 2
Concerned Citizen Runs for Council

ARVADA, Colo. (August 1, 2011) – Cody McNutt announced his candidacy for Arvada City Council this week. Cody McNutt has deep roots in Arvada. His ancestors homesteaded in Arvada over 100 years ago and McNutt says, “Arvada was such a great place we never left”. Cody McNutt is a 4th generation lifelong resident of Arvada and active participant in city affairs. He has attended city council meetings regularly for the past 6 years and is well aware of the issues facing Arvada. For three years Cody McNutt served as Executive Director of the Arvada Harvest Festival. He holds a bachelors degree in business administration from the University of Denver and works as a business consultant.
If elected to council McNutt says he wants to represent hard working families. “I believe people in Arvada deserve better” McNutt said, in regards to the current representation. “There are many issues and people feel like elected officials aren’t listening to them”. He believes current issues, facing the city council such as the trash ordinance and plans to take out the community garden are bad policy. “We need to worry about more important issues facing families like the economy, jobs, and the fact that foreclosure rates are at 14% in Arvada. It is time to roll our sleeves up and get down to work”.

Six community “coffees,” plus other events

ARVADA, Colo. (July 12, 2011) – Prominent Arvada citizens are opening their homes to City Council At-Large Candidate Bob Fifer in the coming weeks, hosting coffee parties that will allow their neighbors to become better acquainted with the city politician who has recently generated so much positive attention.

Two of the six coffee meet-and-greets between now and Sept. 14 will be held at the homes of Homer and Lorraine Anderson (July 27); and Jack and Sarah Gagliardi (Aug. 16). Lorraine Anderson is on the board of directors of the Regional Transportation District; and Sarah Gagliardi is a former Colorado State Representative.

Other events will be held July 21 (the home of Dwayne and Linda Stephenson); Aug. 3 (the home of Tim and Jennifer Allport); Aug. 9 (the home of Edwin and Nancy Bentzen); and Sept. 14 (the home of Mel and Mary Patee).

Most of the events are open to the public, and anyone interested in attending only needs to call Bob Fifer’s campaign committee at 303-929-4278 to reserve a spot and obtain the address.

“In my interaction with Bob Fifer, I have determined that he has the perfect combination of intelligence and passion that make him an asset to the city council,” said Lorraine Anderson, a former Arvada City Council member. “I am honored to have him spend time at my home with my friends and neighbors, and I hope as many people as possible will join us.”

At the events, attendees will hear about the progress of the campaign and the ways in which funds are being directed. Those campaign tactics include yard signs, direct mail, newsletters, advertisements, and others.

Fifer has already started his door-to-door campaign, and he attended several events with his wife and three children during the Independence Day weekend, including the city’s July Fourth activities at Lutz Field and the Valley at Rainbow Ridge Neighborhood Parade sponsored by the Arvada Fire District (Station 2).

First ‘Corner’ Highlights Arvada PD

Councilor Zenzinger’s Event to Focus on Prevention of Summer Crime

"ARVADA, Colo. (June 23, 2011) – At the first “Council on Your Corner” community forum July 12, the Arvada Police Department will present information about ways that citizens can help reduce garage burglaries and car break-ins.

A representative of the APD will be on hand at Panera Bread, 77th Ave. and Wadsworth Blvd., for the 6:30-8 p.m. event, answering any questions about law enforcement and safety in Arvada. Councilmember Rachel Zenzinger will also discuss some of the major issues facing the city and region, and she will invite attendees to offer their own perspectives.

Zenzinger represents Arvada’s District 1, and she will focus on topics most relevant to the east side of Arvada; but anyone with any connections or interest in the city is welcome to attend. Zenzinger will present an update on the city’s budgetary issues, ordinances under consideration, development efforts, etc. And she will encourage participants to express any concerns, suggestions, or support for current city direction.

The event will be the first of a quarterly series that will continue in October, then again in January and April 2012.

While her Councilor on Your Corner series is designed to facilitate interaction between Arvada residents and their elected representative, Zenzinger is available to answer questions throughout the year via email at rzenzinger@arvada.org. Residents can also follow Zenzinger on Twitter (@Zenzinger_AtoZ) as she describes her activities and observations in connection with her duties as an elected official.

Participants of Zenzinger’s Councilor on Your Corner are encouraged to log their own “tweets” live during the event and post them to hashtag #CouncilorCorner.

Zenzinger was elected in November 2009 to serve as a member of the Arvada City Council representing District 1, which is generally described as the northeast part of Arvada from approximately 72nd Avenue north to 88th Avenue, and from Sheridan Blvd. west to Kipling; and the area south of Standley Lake to Simms." - Steve Caulk

We encourage you to go to this event and ask the councilor some tough questions like why she is planning on ripping out the Arvada community garden if she believes in sustainability. Also there should be some questions about her involvement with the School Board and the recent attempts to transfer citizen tax dollars to the schools. As well as the K-8 park which the school district will own but the city will pay for. Again please attend this important event and have your questions ready.
