Arvada police are investigating whether a possible stray dog or a coyote bit a 16-year-old girl during the weekend.
The teenager was walking her heeler mix in the area of 86th Parkway and Simms Street, when either a "mangy-looking dog" or a coyote approached her and bit her on the forearm, according to a news release form the Arvada Police Department.
The girl's dog attacked the animal that bit her, causing it to release her arm and run away.
She described the animal as medium sized, light brown and grayish in color, and very thin with a bushy tail.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife and Arvada's Animal Management Office are also investigating the incident.
While officials have not confirmed it was a coyote that bit the teenager, coyote awareness signs are being posted in the area.

ARVADA, Colo. (August 1, 2011) – Cody McNutt announced his candidacy for Arvada City Council this week. Cody McNutt has deep roots in Arvada. His ancestors homesteaded in Arvada over 100 years ago and McNutt says, “Arvada was such a great place we never left”. Cody McNutt is a 4th generation lifelong resident of Arvada and active participant in city affairs. He has attended city council meetings regularly for the past 6 years and is well aware of the issues facing Arvada. For three years Cody McNutt served as Executive Director of the Arvada Harvest Festival. He holds a bachelors degree in business administration from the University of Denver and works as a business consultant.  

If elected to council McNutt says he wants to represent hard working families. “I believe people in Arvada deserve better” McNutt said, in regards to the current representation. “There are many issues and people feel like elected officials aren’t listening to them”. He believes current issues, facing the city council such as the trash ordinance and plans to take out the community garden are bad policy. “We need to worry about more important issues facing families like the economy, jobs, and the fact that foreclosure rates are at 14% in Arvada. It is time to roll our sleeves up and get down to work”.

School Appearances, Forums on Tap for Candidate Fellman

ARVADA, Colo. (Aug. 1, 2011) – Jill Fellman, candidate for Jefferson County Schools Board of Education, will appear at back-to-school nights at various Jefferson County Schools in late August and early September, and she has two key political forums scheduled.

                The first forum will be Aug. 11 with the North Jeffco Republicans at Indian Tree Golf Course, 7555 Wadsworth Blvd., Arvada; and the second forum will be Aug. 18 with the Arvada Chamber of Commerce at the Arvada Center, 68^th Avenue and Wadsworth Blvd. The Chamber forum is open to the public, and begins at 7 a.m. Tickets are required.

                In the back-to school nights, Fellman will meet with parents, hand out brochures, discuss education issues and give pencils to students. She is still finalizing the back-to-school schedule, but here is the list of schools and dates that she has locked in:

·         Weber Elementary, Aug. 18
·         Evergreen Middle School, Aug. 24
·         D’Evelyn Jr./Sr. High School, Aug. 30
·         Prospect Valley Elementary, Sept. 7

                If you have children at those schools, please plan to look for Fellman’s campaign table and talk to her about anything of interest regarding your children’s education. She will attend at least 26 other back-to-school nights in Jefferson County, and her campaign volunteers will staff other tables at the dozens of other schools in the county.

Possible home invasion turned deadly in Arvada

ARVADA - Arvada Police are seeking suspects in connection with a homicide in the 4800 block of West 60th Avenue before 10 p.m. on Monday.
An unidentified man in the home was injured during a possible home invasion robbery at the residence. The victim was taken to an area hospital where he later died. His name is not being released pending family notification.
Police are looking for suspects who fled the scene.
Anyone with information about this crime or the whereabouts of the suspects is urged to call the Arvada Police Department at 720-898-6900.

Plenty of Opportunities to Meet Arvada Candidate Fifer

Six community “coffees,” plus other events

ARVADA, Colo. (July 12, 2011) – Prominent Arvada citizens are opening their homes to City Council At-Large Candidate Bob Fifer in the coming weeks, hosting coffee parties that will allow their neighbors to become better acquainted with the city politician who has recently generated so much positive attention.

Two of the six coffee meet-and-greets between now and Sept. 14 will be held at the homes of Homer and Lorraine Anderson (July 27); and Jack and Sarah Gagliardi (Aug. 16). Lorraine Anderson is on the board of directors of the Regional Transportation District; and Sarah Gagliardi is a former Colorado State Representative.

Other events will be held July 21 (the home of Dwayne and Linda Stephenson); Aug. 3 (the home of Tim and Jennifer Allport); Aug. 9 (the home of Edwin and Nancy Bentzen); and Sept. 14 (the home of Mel and Mary Patee).

Most of the events are open to the public, and anyone interested in attending only needs to call Bob Fifer’s campaign committee at 303-929-4278 to reserve a spot and obtain the address.

“In my interaction with Bob Fifer, I have determined that he has the perfect combination of intelligence and passion that make him an asset to the city council,” said Lorraine Anderson, a former Arvada City Council member. “I am honored to have him spend time at my home with my friends and neighbors, and I hope as many people as possible will join us.”

At the events, attendees will hear about the progress of the campaign and the ways in which funds are being directed. Those campaign tactics include yard signs, direct mail, newsletters, advertisements, and others.

Fifer has already started his door-to-door campaign, and he attended several events with his wife and three children during the Independence Day weekend, including the city’s July Fourth activities at Lutz Field and the Valley at Rainbow Ridge Neighborhood Parade sponsored by the Arvada Fire District (Station 2).

Bob Frie announced through the Arvada Press that he will be withdrawing his candidacy for Mayor. Little else is known at this point. However, it is still not advised that you vote for Mark Williams. Hopefully another inindividual will enter the race shortly.

Councilor Zenzinger’s Event to Focus on Prevention of Summer Crime

"ARVADA, Colo. (June 23, 2011) – At the first “Council on Your Corner” community forum July 12, the Arvada Police Department will present information about ways that citizens can help reduce garage burglaries and car break-ins.

A representative of the APD will be on hand at Panera Bread, 77^th Ave. and Wadsworth Blvd., for the 6:30-8 p.m. event, answering any questions about law enforcement and safety in Arvada. Councilmember Rachel Zenzinger will also discuss some of the major issues facing the city and region, and she will invite attendees to offer their own perspectives.

Zenzinger represents Arvada’s District 1, and she will focus on topics most relevant to the east side of Arvada; but anyone with any connections or interest in the city is welcome to attend. Zenzinger will present an update on the city’s budgetary issues, ordinances under consideration, development efforts, etc. And she will encourage participants to express any concerns, suggestions, or support for current city direction.

The event will be the first of a quarterly series that will continue in October, then again in January and April 2012.

While her Councilor on Your Corner series is designed to facilitate interaction between Arvada residents and their elected representative, Zenzinger is available to answer questions throughout the year via email at rzenzinger@arvada.org. We encourage you to go to this event and ask the councilor some tough questions like why she is planning on ripping out the Arvada community garden if she believes in sustainability. Also there should be some questions about her involvement with the School Board and the recent attempts to transfer citizen tax dollars to the schools. As well as the K-8 park which the school district will own but the city will pay for. Again please attend this important event and have your questions ready.
