ARVADA, Colo. -- An assistant principal at Arvada High School admitted to police that he was having an affair with a student after his wife found sexually explicit messages on his Facebook page and forced him to turn himself in, according to an arrest affidavit.

Anthony Alvarez, 40, was arrested Thursday night on charges of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust.According to the affidavit, Alvarez's wife caught him talking dirty on the phone to a girl on Wednesday and also found X-rated interactions between the two on his Facebook page.
Alvarez told police he met the girl when he was a teacher at Everitt Middle School in Wheat Ridge and she was in 7th grade, according to the affidavit.He told police the girl, who was now a 15-year-old student at Arvada High, would come into his office, talk to him daily, and entice him by whispering dirty words to him.He told police that the girl "was the one who came on to him," according to the affidavit."He said he was not a predator and he never before had any sexual relationship or sexual contact with anyone under the age of 18. He has had affairs before but they were over the age of 18," according to the affidavit.

Girl Says Alvarez Was 'Blackmailing Her

When police interviewed the girl, she said that she and Alvarez have had a relationship for the past 6 to 8 months.She said she felt like Alvarez was "blackmailing" her, according to the affidavit.She said he touched her chest and butt on occasion, and one time, showed her his erection while they were in his office, according to the affidavit.She said on Aug. 9, Alvarez offered her a ride home after school and she accepted because it was hot outside.She said he drove her to the Landmark movie theater and parked. In the car, he told her to rub his nipples, touch herself, rub his private area, then lick his penis, according to the affidavit.She said she was scared and the doors to the car were locked.She said he eventually opened the door and she went into the theaters to wash her mouth and call her parents.When the officer told the girl that they would like to interview her further at the Children's Advocacy Center, the girl began to cry, fearing that she would be removed from her home, the affidavit said.The officer assured her that they would not remove her from her parent's custody.

Jeffco School District Puts Alvarez On Paid Administrative Leave

Alvarez has been an assistant principal at Arvada High School since 2008.He has been with the Jeffco Public Schools District since 2000.The school district has placed him on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, police said.Investigators said they are still in the process of conducting interviews related to the case.The school district sent the following letter to parents at Arvada High School:

Dear Arvada High School Parents,A Colorado Department of Education rule requires that schools notify parents when a staff member is arrested or charged with violating certain laws.This notice is to inform you that Anthony Alvarez, an assistant principal at Arvada High School, who has worked at the school since 2008 and has been with Jeffco Public Schools since 2000, was arrested and charged with:
• Suspicion of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust. (C.R.S. 18-3-405)
He has been placed on administrative leave.Please remember that under state and federal laws, this person is innocent until proven guilty.The Colorado Department of Education rule prohibits any description in the notice of the underlying fact of the arrest/charge.

City Manger Picked

I wanted to take a few moments to provide you with an update related to the selection process for the next City Manager of Arvada. After an extensive search of candidates from across the nation, Mark Deven (the current City manager of Woodland, California) has been decided upon as the person to succeed Craig Kocian this fall.
This decision was difficult considering the quality of all of the candidates who were considered for this critical post within the organization. It was the thoughtful and vital assistance provided by citizens, business leaders and City staff involved in the overall selection process that offered Council the essential information to make the best decision possible in moving forward in the next chapter of our history.
We have accomplished so much as a City under the outstanding leadership of Craig, and it is the expectation of the entire City Council that Mark will provide the same level of guidance, expertise and dedication that has become the standard set by Craig and the entire employee body.

Zealous Zenzinger Gerrymanders

Our city council representative went to the last redistricting meeting and it wasn't to represent us. She is quoted in the transcript as saying, "With regards [to] the Adams County portion of SD 19, those residents consider themselves Arvadans".

For those of you who don't know this is the definition of gerrymandering just to be clear:

Gerrymander 

1. (Government, Politics & Diplomacy) to divide the constituencies of (a voting area) so as to give one party an unfair advantage

2. to manipulate or adapt to one's advantage

Rachel Palmer Zenzinger from the Arvada City Council spoke. With regards the Adams County portion of SD 19, those residents consider themselves Arvadans and it makes sense to have them in SD 19. Old Town Arvada is the heart of the community. It's been in a different senate district and is now included. The new Gold Line transit line will have a station in the Adams County portion of Arvada. East Arvada is very different from western Arvada. It's older and harder to get funding for from the city council. It makes more sense to divide on Wadsworth. All schools for closure were along Wadsworth. She explained the Wadsworth corridor would be about 88 to 52 to Tennyson.

I only wish we had been able to attend this meeting and watch this farce.

Senator Evie Hudak talked about HD 25 and SD 19. She likes that Westminister is almost contiguous in SD 19. With regards the Adams County portion, it connects Westminster and Arvada. Most of the Latinos who live in Adams County are in Sheridan corridor. Old Town Arvada is very similar to communities on other side of Sheridan. It puts the new part of Arvada in with parts that are already in current SD 16 (proposed 35). She pointed out that school articulation areas are split among a lot of districts. With regards HD 29, it would make sense to wholly inclose it within SD 19.

Please join City Council this Saturday at 8:00am for a "Special" budget meeting at the Arvada Center to discuss how to spend an $8 million dollar budget surplus. It is important that you attend.

Arvada police are investigating whether a possible stray dog or a coyote bit a 16-year-old girl during the weekend.
The teenager was walking her heeler mix in the area of 86th Parkway and Simms Street, when either a "mangy-looking dog" or a coyote approached her and bit her on the forearm, according to a news release form the Arvada Police Department.
The girl's dog attacked the animal that bit her, causing it to release her arm and run away.
She described the animal as medium sized, light brown and grayish in color, and very thin with a bushy tail.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife and Arvada's Animal Management Office are also investigating the incident.
While officials have not confirmed it was a coyote that bit the teenager, coyote awareness signs are being posted in the area.

ARVADA, Colo. (August 1, 2011) – Cody McNutt announced his candidacy for Arvada City Council this week. Cody McNutt has deep roots in Arvada. His ancestors homesteaded in Arvada over 100 years ago and McNutt says, “Arvada was such a great place we never left”. Cody McNutt is a 4th generation lifelong resident of Arvada and active participant in city affairs. He has attended city council meetings regularly for the past 6 years and is well aware of the issues facing Arvada. For three years Cody McNutt served as Executive Director of the Arvada Harvest Festival. He holds a bachelors degree in business administration from the University of Denver and works as a business consultant.  

If elected to council McNutt says he wants to represent hard working families. “I believe people in Arvada deserve better” McNutt said, in regards to the current representation. “There are many issues and people feel like elected officials aren’t listening to them”. He believes current issues, facing the city council such as the trash ordinance and plans to take out the community garden are bad policy. “We need to worry about more important issues facing families like the economy, jobs, and the fact that foreclosure rates are at 14% in Arvada. It is time to roll our sleeves up and get down to work”.

School Appearances, Forums on Tap for Candidate Fellman

ARVADA, Colo. (Aug. 1, 2011) – Jill Fellman, candidate for Jefferson County Schools Board of Education, will appear at back-to-school nights at various Jefferson County Schools in late August and early September, and she has two key political forums scheduled.

                The first forum will be Aug. 11 with the North Jeffco Republicans at Indian Tree Golf Course, 7555 Wadsworth Blvd., Arvada; and the second forum will be Aug. 18 with the Arvada Chamber of Commerce at the Arvada Center, 68^th Avenue and Wadsworth Blvd. The Chamber forum is open to the public, and begins at 7 a.m. Tickets are required.

                In the back-to school nights, Fellman will meet with parents, hand out brochures, discuss education issues and give pencils to students. She is still finalizing the back-to-school schedule, but here is the list of schools and dates that she has locked in:

·         Weber Elementary, Aug. 18
·         Evergreen Middle School, Aug. 24
·         D’Evelyn Jr./Sr. High School, Aug. 30
·         Prospect Valley Elementary, Sept. 7

She will attend at least 26 other back-to-school nights in Jefferson County, and her campaign volunteers will staff other tables at the dozens of other schools in the county.
